Niigata University has been engaged in the campus-wide promotion of GIS research and education since 2005. This year stands for the end of this support project, and in this symposium, we discussed the problems and possible futures of our project.

We have implemented our GIS project-support according to the following three missions:

  1. To keep up with cutting-edge research trends through international collaboration
  2. To make a global leap based on the cultivation of local communities
  3. To open up new and original fields through interdisciplinary practices of research and education

The symposium also followed these missions. In the first block, we discussed cutting-edge issues of GIS research by inviting Professor Brunsdon from Leicester Universy, UK. In the second, we deat with the current issues on a possible partnership with local governments and communities through GIS education. In the third section, we presented the newest research projects of our GIS research and education that have been made possible through interdisciplinary collaboration between Human Health GIS Center and Center for Disaster Mitigation and Environment.

In addition to oral presentations, we also invited several booth exhibitions and posters and panels from GIS-related companies and researchers.

For this event, we had over 120 audiences. We would like to thank our supporters.
