Train time tables of Echigo Line (JR East web site; in Japanese; The 8:21 train does not go to Niigata Daigaku Mae but to Sekiya only and is not available on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. The 8:00 train takes 30 minutes and 8:11 train takes 27 minutes to Niigata Daigaku Mae while other trains take approximately 20 minutes.)
The main exit of Niigata train station is called Bandai Exit. On the other side, it has East Exit and West Exit. Although South Exist does not exist in reality, the other side of the main Bandai Exit, including East and West Exits, is called South Exit. The reserved hotel is close to the main Bandai Exit, although West Exit is more convenient to take a Shinkansen train.
While the main exit area and platforms for conventional trains almost remain as they were constructed in 1958 (relocated from the area where the reserved hotel is now located), the South Exit was developed when the Shinkansen was constructed in 1982 and is still developing. However, since reconstruction of the station started in late 2012, there may be substantial changes until the reconstruction is completed by elevating the whole station to the level of the elevated Shinkansen platform in several years.
