Some students have come to Niigata for only one semester but want to extend their stay for another semester as they have liked Niigata. When you want to do so, please inform both your own university and Niigata University, including your advisers and the International Affairs Division at Niigata University as early as possible. Because the student exchange is based on agreement between your university and Niigata University, not between you yourself and Niigata University, the extension is primarily subject to the decision of YOUR University. Also, it may take time to extend your stay permit in Japan. Furthermore, you may be allowed to extend your stay at the International House for which the rent is smaller if you inform Niigata University of your intention early. (25 August 2008)
1学期間の予定で来た交換留学生が、新潟大学を気に入り、2学期間の留学に延長する例が増えています。そのような延長を希望する場合、自分の大学と新潟大学(指導教員及び国際課)の両方に、できるだけ早く知らせて下さい。交換留学は、大学と大学の間の協定に基づくものであり、学生個人と新潟大学の間で行われているものではありません。そのため、留学期間の延長には、まず、学生を派遣している大学の決定が必要です。また、日本の在留許可の延長などの手続きに時間がかかることがあります。更に、早めに新潟大学に連絡して頂けば、引き続き、少額の使用料で住む国際会館に引き続いて住むことができる可能性もあります。(2008年8月25日)

1. Objective of the program

With a view to contributing to enhancing the knowledge of their research areas and also to enhancing their understanding of Japan by accepting students from foreign universities as well as to strengthened cooperation and collaboration among universities, the SSWAN program is organized by the International Exchange Support Center in cooperation with the Faculties and Graduate Schools of Niigata University.

外国の大学等に在学する学生を新潟大学に受け入れ、当該学生の専門分野の知識の向上及び我が国への理解を深めるとともに大学間等の協力及び連携の強化を図ることを目的として、各学部及び各研究科の協力の下に、国際センターが短期留学プログラムを開設しています。

2. An outline of the program

The eligible students are (a) undergraduate students in the third or fourth year at universities that have exchange agreements with Niigata University or with one of its Faculties and (b) graduate students at the Master's level at universities that have exchange agreements with Niigata University or with one of its Graduate Schools. (Not all the exchange students under exchange agreements are required to participate in this program.)

All the classes for this program are given in the English language. Therefore capacities to listen to, speak, read and write English are essential to participate in this program as a student. Submission of a certificate of the applicant's capacities in English is not required at Niigata University. However, reference may be made to the fact that a national university obligates applicants to submit a certificate of the TOEFL score of 530 or above.

However, there will be one exception.  Prof. Masui will give a new class on Chinese Politics in Chinese.

具体的に短期留学プログラムの対象となる学生は、(a)本学との間において大学間交流協定又は部局間交流協定を締結している外国の大学等の学部の3年次以上に在学している者及び(b)本学との間において大学間交流協定又は部局間交流協定を締結している外国の大学等の大学院の修士課程に在籍している学生です。(大学間等の学生交換協定に基づいて本学に滞在していても、主に学部または研究科の開講科目を受講する等して、短期留学プログラムに参加していない学生もいます。)

これまで、短期留学プログラムの開講科目は、いずれも英語で行ってきました。英語を聞き、話し、読み、書く能力が必要です。新潟大学では、英語の資格試験結果の提出を求めていませんが、TOEFL530点以上を条件にしている国立大学がある事実などは参考になるかと思います。

但し、2008年度、初めての試みとして、真水教授が中国語による「中国政治特論（日中関係史）」を開講します。

3. SSWAN subjects and syllabuses

(1) SSWAN subjects

There are three kinds of classes:

(a) Subjects on Japan,
(b) Subjects on the Japanese language, and
(c) Other subjects on various academic fields in accordance with the needs of the current short-term exchange students.

No classes for the group (b) above will be given during this school year. However, there are Japanese language classes (Japanese A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J) as regular General Education Subjects as well as non-credit classes especially during summer and spring breaks. There are also informal classes organized by the students of the International Volunteer Circle. It is suggested that students who want to learn Japanese take some of these classes in accordance with their capabilities and needs. Those students who want to take the formal Japanese language classes for credits must either take an exam of the ISC or submit a certificate of their Japanese proficiency. Please check the conditions specified in the syllabus of each Japanese language class.

このプログラムの開講科目には、次の3種類があります。

(a)日本に関する科目、
(b)日本語に関する科目、及び
(c)その他の様々な分野の専攻の交換留学生の実際のニーズに応じた科目。

今年度、短期留学プログラムとしての日本語科目は開講されませんが、教養科目として開講されている日本語科目(日本語A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J)のほか、夏休み、春休みに開講される集中講義(単位は出ません。)、学生グループの「国際ボランティアサークル」の行う授業などを受講することが勧められます。それらのうちの教養科目として開講される日本語科目の受講には、一定以上の能力が求められます。シラバス中の注意書きをよく読み、事前に国際センターの試験を受けるかまたは能力証明書を提出して下さい。

4. Registration

Now students can register themselves for the SSWAN classes in the web site at:

Application to take classes must be made during the following periods:

Spring Semester: Tuesday, 1 April 2008 - Thursday, 17 April
Autumn Semester: Wednesday, 17 September 2008 - Tuesday, 7 October 2008

Students may change the classes to take during the following periods:

Spring Semester: Friday, 18 April 2008 – Thursday, 1 May 2008
Autumn Semester: Wednesday, 8 October 2008 - Tuesday, 21 October 2008

However, we regret that so far the web site menu is written in Japanese only. Therefore it may not be easy for those students who are not good at Japanese to use this site. Also, new-comers may not have sufficient knowledge or skills to use the site. Therefore the International Affairs Division, particularly those staff who are responsible for the SSWAN program, are happy to help you register for any classes, not only for SSWAN classes but also for other classes. Please do not hesitate to come to the International Affairs Division for such help. (In all cases, the withdrawal or change of the classes to take can be done with a printed form only.)

6. Special note for regular students

新潟大学の正規生(通常の学生)も、各授業の担当教員の承認を得て、短期留学プログラムの開講科目を履修することが可能です。上記1-5の注意、シラバス等をよく読んだ上で履修手続きをして下さい。

但し、短期留学プログラムの学生が優先されます。また、卒業に必要な単位として認定するかどうか等、単位の扱いについては、それぞれの学部・研究科の規定によります。単位認定については、それぞれの学部・研究科の学務係等に確認して下さい。

なお、2007年度から、Rのついた科目も、新潟大学の他の全科目と同じく、ウェブ上(学務情報システム)から登録する仕組みになりました。
